Psychotherapy – or therapy is a treatment for those who have mental health problems and emotional distress. There are various approaches and styles of therapy. Therapy counseling means examining the life of a client and gaining insight into the difficulties that someone is facing. These could be related to relationships, family, work, money etc.
The research shows having a trusting relationship with a therapist is one of the main ingredients to healing. A positive change that happens over time of going to therapy sessions. It helps the releasing of negative emotions and energy that have accumulated over time. Positive benefits can be visible after a couple of sessions, but for the best results 3-6 months is the average time it takes to change patterned behavior.
If you have trouble with substances, anger, sleep, anxiety, lack of energy, have suppressed or visible trauma, mental illnesses, depression, emotional stress, loss of a loved one, eating disorders, flashbacks, nightmares, PTSD signs etc. are just some of the most common reasons why people decide to go to treatments.
Individuals of color, unfortunately, deal with additional daily stressors. Racial and gender biases can emerge in any aspect of their lives creating additional barriers to success. Getting professional help and advice can benefit you – you will gain more confidence and learn how to cope with difficult emotions.
The philosophy at HSC leads with meeting the individual where he or she is at in their journey. HSC therapy leads with the heart not the mind. I do not see myself as “the expert”. I am here to walk alongside you in your healing journey. Therapy should not feel cold and stiff, with only one person doing the talking. It is an exchange of energy and shared experience. An effective therapist is someone who knows how to gain your trust, who actively listens empathically, and connects you to your own inner strengths. Opening and developing a relationship with a therapist helps you to heal childhood wounds and overcome daily challenges that keep you feeling stuck.
It is best to get started with a therapist that has the right licensing. You can always check my credentials below and look me up:

Some hints that you’re dealing with an ineffective therapist are:
- Not consistent with appointments and reschedules often
- Talking too much,
- Not informing you that you need a higher level of care
- Being judgmental,
- Looking uninterested in what you’re saying,
- Sharing inappropriate information about their life or the life of other clients,
- Making sexual overtures toward a client,
- Breaking confidentiality,
- Threatening or blackmailing
Yes, I have over 15 years of experience as a licensed clinical professional counselor. Research shows that the most significant factor in successful outcomes in therapy is “therapeutic alliance,” or the quality of the relationship between client and therapist. Therefore, you are invited to remain open in the selection process and consider both connection as well as credentials. If for some reason you do not feel a connection, it is completely ok and hope you can communicate that, if needed. In this field a good therapist will never be upset because a client is doing what is best for them!
